My Days with Pistol Pete Maravich

To say that Pistol Pete Maravich made a “mark” on basketball is a gross understatement. Many writers have to lean on hyperbole to explain Pete’s phenomenal rise to greatness. It’s fun to list just some of his accomplishments so readers can enjoy the quick “snap shot” of history. Here are a few of the college facts:

1. All-Time NCAA Career Scoring Leader with record 3,667 points. (3 years; no three-point line) 2. Record average of 44.2 points for 83 games. 3. Ranks first, fourth and fifth in NCAA history for most points in a single season.
4. Averaged a record 43.8 points per game in 1968. 5. Averaged a record 44.2 points per game in 1969. 6. Averaged a record 44.5 points per game in 1970.
7. Scored 69 points vs. Alabama, Feb. 7, 1970. 8. Led LSU to the NIT Final Four in 1970. 9. First-team All-American in 1968.

In 1988, Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer signed legislation that changed the official name of Louisiana State University’s basketball arena to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
